Star Program

Changes to STAR – STAR Credit

New homeowners or homeowners who have moved into a new home after 8/1/2015, must apply for STAR with the NYS Department of Tax and Finance.  Once a homeowner has applied with the state, they will verify your eligibility and issue checks sometime that September.  The new STAR check program replaces the STAR exemption.  There will be no need to reapply.

How to register

When you register for the STAR credit, the Tax Department will automatically review your application to determine whether you are eligible for the Basic or Enhanced STAR benefit amount.

To complete your registration online go to www.tax.ny.gov/star
Click on "Register for Star"

Information you will need:

  1. Names and social security numbers for all owners of the property and their spouses.
  2. There will be questions about the income and residency of the owners and their spouses.
  3. Date you purchased your property and the name of the sellers.

Note: You will be prompted to provide your property’s STAR code (if you have one) and parcel tax map number, but they are not required to complete the registration.

All questions regarding this process should be directed the Department of Tax and Finance at (518) 457-2036.
